This presentation will showcase District processes in a family and domestic violence case through consultation and mappings at each point of transfer, as well as critical decision making by Team Leaders, workers and the District Director. It will also evidence the challenges and struggles in working with the whole family and how the challenges of being risk sensible as opposed to risk adverse were addressed.
The decision made by the District Director not to bring the children into care was very difficult for some workers to deal with, as they felt the children would be safer in care. At the transfer meeting there was a very robust discussion about the options available to the Department and to the family.
This case highlights the benefits of case consultation; of adopting an approach that takes into consideration family/child factors, family and domestic violence knowledge, and the importance of engagement and respect with families.
The tools of engagement with the family drew on the domestic violence policy, Signs of Safety mappings internally as well as with the family, Safety Planning with the family and their Safety Network, and finally the Safety House with the parents and children. (Peel District).
