This presentation seeks to illustrate how the Midland Child Centred Family Support team has incorporated the Signs of Safety Framework to develop their everyday practice, and the specific positive outcomes of this for children and families. Another positive outcome is the boost to the workers’ confidence and sense of achievement.
This team has the responsibility to work with families where harm (or risk of significant harm) has been substantiated for their children, in an effort to enable the children to remain within their family and remain safe.
The key work demonstrated in this presentation is a mapping workers did with three children (aged 13, 11 and nine) shortly after they needed to come into care from a very volatile situation, to examine the children’s understanding of the dangers and explore what they would need to feel safe to return home.
Although this was “every day work” with the adults in the families, it was “unchartered territory” for the workers to specifically map a case with the children. However they had an existing strong relationship with the children as a starting point and the outcomes that were achieved powerfully demonstrated the importance of doing this work.
Being willing to listen to the children has been very important in helping them to move forward as it has helped workers to better understand their trauma and their current needs. It has also provided valuable learning to the Team that can benefit other children. (Midland District).
